The Significato Journal is not a political magazine, so this section contains essays that don't quite fit at Significato, as well as new essays on spirituality that may also be published at Significato.
In addition, I may add links to items at Significato that I'd like to highlight here. To read my essays and short stories at Significato, etc, visit:
~ a Christmas meditation on the gifts of love
The feeling of being loved by an invisible source grows exponentially as we notice the gifts of love that we receive every day. Even gifts from human beings are not just from those fine individuals, because their love is part of a continuum of love that preexisted their birth. Thus, a gift from one person is a gift from the Creator of love and the creator of gifts. No one can say, “I created love. I created beauty,” no matter how far back in history one goes. more
The tragic fraud of tyranny is revealed with simple questions, asked to its victims: “Are you unhappy, living under tyranny? If there were no retribution of any kind, would you like to be free to do as you pleased?”
The answer may be slow in coming, for tyranny is a destroyer of dreams. Yet, over time, which soul, created from the same star stuff, would say, “No”? more
This essay was the basis for a speech I gave at the event of the same name, on November 20, 2019, co-hosted by the Gray and Windham Republican Committees with the co-sponsorship and support of 50 additional organizations and leaders. Around 100 people attended.
Socialism would destroy America’s economy and freedoms because it’s a totalitarian system rooted in hatred, envy, and revenge that gives political and economic power to a bureaucratic élite who inevitably become corrupt as they steal from the masses whom they set out to liberate. As socialism removes economic and political freedoms, it crushes the human soul and turns its citizens into jailers and slaves. Personal dreams and ambitions fade away, and society descends into bored mediocrity, corruption, poverty, fear, and death. more
~ This essay was the basis of a public speech given on August 15, 2019, co-hosted by the Gray Republican Committee in Gray, Maine. Brown is the Chairman of that committee. You can view that speech here.
First, liberals and conservatives need to join together and affirm that we want to be free and that living a life of freedom requires thought and free-flowing dialogue. Totalitarians don’t like freedom of thought at all. more
~ This essay is an updated and expanded excerpt (the second part called "Reparations") from the longer essay “Identity Politics is a Revenge-Driven Tragedy That Will Make the Whole World Blind.” The original essay has also been updated to match this new content.
Reparations for one demands reparations for all, because all humans have ancestors who were victimized by someone. All humans also have one or more ancestors who harmed someone else. Thus, the call for reparations must be replaced by the much higher commitment of love and forgiveness in all directions. That is a path toward peace. more
On June 1, 2019, I found myself very comforted during a late-night prayer with a message about love and the confidence that the day will come for each person when their soul will smile.
Think of how many people look and feel. They are exhausted by their pain. They may know that they were created to feel differently, but they cannot muster the spark that will light the fire of love that will one day burst forth from their soul. They are too tired at the moment. more
The First Amendment’s protection of freedom of religion and freedom of speech must be guarded at all costs from both political and cultural totalitarianism. If we cannot talk about everything, no matter how much certain topics might offend others, we will inevitably slide into tyranny. How can a people be free with tape over their mouths? more
This is the essay upon which my speech at the Gray Republicans' May 8, 2019 event on the Crisis of Immigration at the Southern Border was based.
In the flurry of opinions about immigration, border walls, compassion for immigrants and their children, economics, and an influx of crime, there is a larger, more urgent, and civilization-changing crisis: the real probability that open-borders immigration would destroy American sovereignty and exceptionalism. more
~ Presenting a simple resource guide to gain a clear understanding of the REAL Islam
~ Original publication: October, 2018. Updated on May 12, 2019
If Islam were “just a religion,” studying it would not be necessary unless one simply wanted to learn about the religion.
However, Islam is not just a religion. It is also a political ideology that when put into practice results in loss of freedom, violence, and ultimately mass slavery of its populations. To many, this statement may seem “intolerant.” However, those who study Islam in depth, without apology for Islam, and those who study Islam’s historical record, will indeed find that Islam poses an existential threat to free civilizations.
This does not mean that “Muslims are bad.” That would be bigotry... more
~ Updated with new content on June 30, 2019, in the second half of the essay, about "Reparations." That second half has also been copied to a stand-alone essay called "Reparations for One Demands Reparations for All."
In Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s book Strength to Love, he wrote:
Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. The healing of the human race requires an adjustment in the values of humanity. When love becomes the most valuable thing of all, then we do indeed have hope to abandon the revenge-driven tragedy of identity politics. more
