How Long Will a Free America Survive?

~ Why Republicans, conservatives, and liberals need to boldly educate voters about America’s founding principles of freedom—and the threats to its survival

This text was presented on January 29, 2019, as a public speech at the first in a series of "Save America and Freedom" public presentations sponsored by the Gray Republican Committee of Gray, Maine. The talk was thirty minutes long and was followed by thirty minutes of Q&A and discussion.

Peter is the current Chairman of that Committee, and is available to give this talk in other locations.

How long will a free America survive?

2018 demonstrated more clearly than ever that the Democratic Party has been subverted by hard-line leftists. This does not mean that all Democrats are leftists. Many, if not most Democratic voters are good-hearted liberals and fine citizens. In addition, since all humans are sacred, when I speak about leftists I speak of their harmful actions, not their innate value as human beings. My prayer for leftists is that they more deeply consider the values of love, beauty, joy, and freedom, and renounce all ideologies of tyranny.

Unlike good-hearted liberals, when one turns to Democratic, hard-left activists, it’s common to find individuals burning with anger against the status quo. They rage against America, Republicans, and a huge array of perceived injustices. It’s safe to say that Democratic activists are in scorch-and-burn warrior mode. They’re fighting an enemy they actively hate, and they are fighting to win by any means necessary, whether moral or not. They are constantly educating and motivating voters with the latest “horrors” coming from the Republican camp—and their voter base is growing, especially among millennials.

Compared to hard-left Democratic activists, many Republican activists are polite, respectful, considerate, and supporters of fair-play. They’re often busy with jobs and family and don’t share the same intense focus on educating and “riling up their voter base.” In better times, their comparatively laid-back stance on politics would be understandable.

Unfortunately, these are not “the best of times” if one considers the status of freedom in America today. Thus, I believe that the central issue in front of the Republican Party, and indeed all freedom-loving conservatives, libertarians, and liberals, is this question:

Will the American standards of freedom, birthed in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence and in 1788 with the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, continue to endure?

That grand American experiment started by the Founding Fathers has been under siege since at least the 1960s, when Marxists intensified their “long march through the institutions.” Now, it’s not hyperbole to say that the hard-left owns academia, the media, and the Hollywood entertainment complex. Their assault on these institutions is ramping up, with leftists bringing their ideology to K-12 schools and inserting politically correct (PC), leftist propaganda in more and more episodes of popular TV shows.

Although classical, good-hearted liberals are not the same as hardcore leftists, it is unfortunate that huge numbers of liberals have been strongly influenced by an overwhelming cultural blanket of PC groupthink. Because the leftist narrative dominates the culture, liberals who don’t naturally gravitate toward conservative news outlets end up being fed ever more radical content by the left that is hard to resist. Still, increasing numbers of liberals are rejecting the extremism of the left and are joining the #WalkAway movement. They are finding that conservatives are generally far more open-minded and respectful than the Left that they left behind.

A deeply unfortunate result of the Marxist-inspired, leftist barrage of disinformation is that a large percentage of millennials prefer socialism over capitalism, and have an almost nonexistent knowledge of the actual classical history of the West and America that gave them the freedoms and prosperity they enjoy today.

This ignorance and historical disinformation have consequently fueled the rise of totalitarianism in America and the West. One might question that rise, but consider that totalitarianism is not only birthed from a sudden, violent revolution. It also creeps silently toward its goal when people are too busy to notice that freedom is under threat.

Its herald today is the call to “not offend the oppressed.” Since few people want to be offensive, totalitarianism grows by permission, with the growth of identity politics, political correctness, hate speech laws that violate the First Amendment, and condemnations of anyone who speaks up in defense of so-called “oppressors.” Identity politics has succeeded in herding individuals into hostile groups pitted against each other.

Cultural Marxism is driving the marginalization of conservatives and Republicans who dare to oppose the Left’s ideology of political correctness. As we saw with the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, attacks by leftists are vicious and are patterned after time-honored Marxist methodologies.

James Simpson’s excellent article “The Kavanaugh Allegations Are Psychological Terrorism, And It’s Time They End,” published in The Federalist on October 3, 2018, quoted Vladimir Lenin, who said:

We must be ready to employ trickery, deceit, law-breaking, withholding and concealing truth… We can and must write in a language that inspires hate, revulsion and scorn toward those who disagree with us.

Simpson then quoted a Soviet directive which stated:

Members and front organizations must continually embarrass, discredit and degrade our critics. When obstructionists become too irritating, label them as fascist or Nazi or anti-Semitic . . . constantly associate those who oppose us with those names that already have a bad smell. The association will, after enough repetition, become ‘fact’ in the public mind.

Cultural Marxism has succeeded in branding America as an evil, institutionally racist country founded on slavery and oppression. Huge numbers of millennial voters believe this to be true. But it is false. Millions of non-white immigrants are eager and happy to come to America: one of the least racist nations on earth.

The Left is very close to achieving the complete elimination of free speech in America. They work toward this goal via political and legal means and also use fear to dominate public opinion with the threat of being called a hater or any variety of phobe. How many people do you know who self-censor their words and opinions to avoid attack? The Left is very quick to label ordinary disagreement as hate speech, even though it is not.

While real hate speech is indefensible from a moral viewpoint, it must still be allowed in order to protect free speech for everyone, because ultimately who will define hate speech? As Dr. Jordan Peterson says, “the last people in the world you would want to.” Creating a culture that bans hate speech will also become self-consuming. Today’s hate-speech policeman will be tomorrow’s victim.

The Left has been wildly successful in their drive to own the cultural narrative. One way they do that is to rebrand, co-opt, and misuse words. They accuse conservatives of being hateful, and then self-righteously trot out words like “love,” “compassion,” and “kindness.” Their platform of victimology provides them with ammunition to castigate as bigots anyone who doesn’t agree with their views on right and wrong.

Yet, they are hypocrites, because their compassion for those who suffer is limited to individuals who follow the Leftist party line. Leftist and feminist hypocrisy is especially evident when one examines the plight of women and the genocide of Christians under Islam. One also sees the Left’s misuse of words when one looks at their behavior toward so-called marginalized individuals like gays or blacks when those individuals become conservative. Hatred erupts, with gay, conservative Jews branded as Nazis, and black conservatives accused of being white supremacists.

Conservatives and good-hearted liberals need to reclaim their ownership of words like “love” and “peace” and “compassion” and throw them back at Leftists. They need to articulate, over and over again, that many Leftists are not loving or compassionate or kind or peaceful, because if they were, the evidence of it would be plain to see, rather than the opposite.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was not racist toward whites. One’s character was and is more important than one’s color. In my opinion, that standard of ethics and cultural behavior is based on the sacred love that was initiated by God, the intelligent Creator of the universe. Whether a person is religious or not, it cannot be ignored that the ethic of unselfish love as articulated in Judeo-Christian traditions informs a pattern of charitable behavior that has served as a foundation of Western culture and the traditions of freedom in America.

The impact of Godly love on human behavior is clearly seen in the radical difference between the moral and ethical positions of the American Founding Fathers and the actions of terror by the citizens of the French Revolution, as they guillotined innocents and screamed “J’accuse!” It is a common phenomenon that evil accuses good of the sins that evil commits.

What then is the moral high ground that conservatives must claim in the clash of values with the Left? My view is that love—real, wide, sacred love—must lead us in our efforts. Love must be expressed in all directions, not just toward those of like mind. Thus, we can say to Leftists that we—and they—must work to love and save the victims of tyranny, including women and Christians under Islam. At the same time, we must treat each other with respect and love even when we disagree. Most Leftists utterly fail at this. It’s time that we clearly articulate to them and the public at large that when Leftists express totalitarian hatred and violence toward conservatives they have completely lost the moral high ground.

I like to summarize it thus:

One of the Great Dilemmas of life is how to love everyone while fighting Tyranny. Isn’t it true that deep down, all humans desire love, beauty, joy, and freedom? Love gives birth to freedom, and “the Death of Love” destroys freedom. Thus, to defend Love and Freedom, we must fight Tyranny, and remember the words: “Love your enemies.” (Matthew 5:44)

Unfortunately for the growth of love, 2018 brought a new strategy to eliminate free speech: that of deplatforming. Conservatives are being kicked off website hosting platforms, DNS providers, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and the crowdfunding platform Patreon. Their accounts with payment processors such as PayPal, Mastercard, and Visa are being shut down. What’s next? Will conservatives be prevented from opening bank accounts, or shopping at stores?

In the January 2, 2019 Breitbart article “The Terrifying Rise of Financial Blacklisting,” Allum Bokhari wrote:

Financial blacklisting doesn’t just rob you of a chance to spread your message: it robs you of your ability to do business, your livelihood, your very means of functioning in a capitalist society. Thanks to the encroachment of progressive ideology into the financial industry — including major credit card companies like Visa, Discover, and Mastercard — it has now become a reality.

Deplatforming has a crushing impact on elections and Republican candidates. Jim Hoft of The Gateway Pundit reported on November 9, 2018 that Facebook’s purge of conservative content prior to the 2018 midterm elections resulted in a decrease of at least two billion page views on conservative websites. This prevented many voters, including suburban women swing voters, from getting vote-changing news via Facebook. Hoft speculated that Facebook’s censorship may have cost the GOP the House in 2018.

Communist China uses a “social credit score” to penalize citizens who oppose the regime. It’s not a stretch to assume that the Left will try to institute social credit scores in the West. In fact, The Daily Caller reported on November 17, 2018 that “New York entrepreneur and Democratic 2020 [Presidential] candidate Andrew Yang wants to implement a system in which a government-run mobile app rewards Americans with ‘digital social credits’ (DSCs) for good behavior.”

It is also very bad news for the West that the aggressions against freedom by the Left have been bolstered by Islamists who wage war on freedom through acts of terror, Civilizational Jihad, and the spread of totalitarian Sharī‘ah law. The Women’s March was led in part by Linda Sarsour, a committed Islamist who makes no apology for her support of Islamic Sharī‘ah law which oppresses women—a fact that I find horrifying in its severe dysfunction.

If you’re wondering what Islam has to do with the attack on free speech, just remember the word “Islamophobia.” Then remember the Danish cartoon violence, Salman Rushdie, Charlie Hebdo, and the huge numbers of Islamic terror attacks that are going on all over the world—over thirty-four thousand separate jihad attacks since 9/11, according to thereligionofpeace.com.

Let me strongly emphasize here that concerns about freedom under Islam are not anti-Muslim or “racist.” Muslims are multi-racial and large numbers of Muslims are good-hearted, freedom-loving individuals who often are the first victims of Islam. They cannot criticize Mohammed or Islam upon pain of death. Concerns about Islam—not Muslims specifically—are relevant because of Islam’s violent and totalitarian history and its supremacist doctrines.

Republicans who criticize Islam are screamed at by Islamists who condemn blasphemers and apostates to death, and are also castigated by Leftists as haters and Islamophobes. It’s an unholy alliance between Marxism and Islam that if successful will remove all free speech for generations to come. It will also result in war between Marxism and Islam, because both ideologies want to reign supreme. Unless freedom-loving people push back against these forces, it is entirely possible that the twenty-first century will see a global hegemony divided between Communist China, an Islamic Caliphate that includes Europe and Britain, and a Marxist North America.

It is clear that America is being attacked from within by malevolent forces who wish to completely eliminate free speech. Their attacks are clever, forceful, and effective, and, at least for them, the goal of the destruction of free speech is clearly in view.

The British Islamist Anjem Choudary stated: “By 2050, Britain will be a majority Muslim country. It will be the end of freedom of democracy...”

In the November 2, 2018 podcast “America’s Division Stems From Opposing Views Of Freedom,” hosted at The Federalist by publisher Ben Domenech, Os Guinness, the British author and social critic, stated that America is at a “Rubicon moment.” He predicted that if we don’t reverse the destructive trends of Leftism the American experiment has only ten or fifteen years left.

Republicans don’t want America to become a totalitarian state of any flavor. However, with the political rise of a majority of millennials who cannot see the danger of creeping totalitarianism, we have very little time to counter the deadly effects of Cultural Marxism, Leftism, and Political Islamism.

For that reason, I believe that Republicans, conservatives, libertarians, and good-hearted, freedom-loving liberals must speak out and fight back—both defensively and offensively—against any and all attacks on freedom and free speech. We must call ourselves and our fellow citizens to action—a call to action to quite literally save America and freedom.

So… we have a call to action! What actions can we do to save America and freedom? Here’s my prescription.

Republicans must win elections—and thus implement and preserve legislation that safeguards America’s values—by educating and motivating voters about the importance of America’s founding principles of constitutional freedoms and the primary threats to liberty that are facing America today.

Educating voters is vital because miseducated voters will not vote for the principles of freedom.

Let me repeat that:

Educating voters is vital because miseducated voters will not vote for the principles of freedom.

There are many threats that need attention, including things like a balanced budget, but I believe that failing to educate voters about the following four issues has the potential to irreparably damage American and Western civilization, because these four issues drastically affect the minds and hearts of people. They are:

ISSUE #1: The absolute necessity to allow free speech about any topic without reprisal from cultural or political totalitarianism from social media platforms, payment processors, banks, employers, other institutions, or the government. When free speech is gone, the game is over.

As one example of that, Marxism, Socialism, and Islam have flourished because they deliberately shut down all criticism of their systems because their ideas cannot survive real, extended criticism and debate. Thus, all political, religious, and social topics must be permanently open to debate without reprisal or specious ad hominem accusations about racism, sexism, hate speech, Islamophobia, or any other “phobia.”

“Phobia” is defined as “a persistent, irrational fear.” It’s safe to presume that most conservatives are not animated by phobias about the social and political topics I’ve listed. If anything, one can see what looks like irrational fear coming from the Left, demonstrated by protesters shrieking hysterically and hatefully at conservative speakers.

ISSUE #2: The value of Capitalism over Socialism or Marxism

Free-market capitalism is continuing to dramatically reduce global extreme poverty. This is in direct contrast to the horrendous economic record and totalitarian nature of Socialism and Marxism. Venezuela is a current and tragic example.

As reported by Aaron Bandler in the article “5 Statistics Showing How Capitalism Solves Poverty,” published in The Daily Wire on March 18, 2017: “The number of people living in extreme poverty worldwide declined by 80 percent from 1970 to 2006.”

Bandler quoted American Enterprise Institute president Arthur Brooks in a 2012 speech, who stated: “It was globalization, free trade, the boom in international entrepreneurship. In short, it was the free enterprise system, American style, which is our gift to the world.”

Unfortunately, capitalism is severely under attack, because of ignorance about its ability to improve lives.

Writing in The Hill on September 26, 2018, in an article titled “Globalization’s greatest triumph: the death of extreme poverty,” Johan Norberg, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, wrote: “It is the greatest story of our time, and it’s one few have heard of. Mankind is defeating extreme poverty.” He went on to say: “When Americans were asked what had happened to global poverty the last 20 years, only 5 percent answered that it had halved; 66 percent thought it had doubled.”

Pro-Socialist millennials and others need to hear the truth about free-market capitalism.

ISSUE #3: The central importance of the biological definitions of male and female in the preservation of the family system and the healthy fabric of society

Michelle Cretella, M.D., is executive director of the American College of Pediatricians. In her July 03, 2017 article, “I’m a Pediatrician. How Transgender Ideology Has Infiltrated My Field and Produced Large-Scale Child Abuse,” written for The Daily Signal, a publication of The Heritage Foundation, she wrote:

I have witnessed an upending of the medical consensus on the nature of gender identity. What doctors once treated as a mental illness, the medical community now largely affirms and even promotes as normal. . . .

These professionals are using the myth that people are born transgender to justify engaging in massive, uncontrolled, and unconsented experimentation on children who have a psychological condition that would otherwise resolve after puberty in the vast majority of cases. . . .

These harms constitute nothing less than institutionalized child abuse. Sound ethics demand an immediate end to the use of pubertal suppression, cross-sex hormones, and sex reassignment surgeries in children and adolescents, as well as an end to promoting gender ideology via school curricula and legislative policies.

ISSUE #4: The violent historical record and totalitarian nature of orthodox Islam, Sharī‘ah law, and jihad

To prevent the Islamization of America, public debate and comprehensive education about the violent and totalitarian nature of Islam and Mohammed’s personal life must be actively pursued.

Unrestricted debate engenders progress and freedom and only harms those who wish to hide from the truth.

Let me repeat that:

Unrestricted debate engenders progress and freedom and only harms those who wish to hide from the truth.

Therefore, Islamic blasphemy and apostasy laws must not be enacted in any form, because they violate the First Amendment and open the door to Islamic totalitarianism.

In addition, U.S. laws must be enforced with Muslims, just as they are with other citizens. That means that Sharī‘ah law, punishment of blasphemers and apostates, wife-beating, female genital mutilation, and other Islamic practices that violate U.S. law must not be allowed. Public schools cannot include Islamic religious indoctrination (as many now do) because that violates the separation of church and state. Muslims cannot receive exemptions from U.S. laws that other religious citizens like Christians and Jews do not receive.

This method of enforcing existing US law with Muslims was suggested by Robert Spencer in a Dec 26, 2018 conversation with David Wood in their video “Patreon, MasterCard, and Jihad.” Spencer compared it to the “Broken Windows” method of community policing practiced in New York City, which dramatically reduced crime after broken windows in abandoned buildings were repaired. Islamic Civilizational jihad will be partially held at bay by forcing Muslims to obey the same American laws that everyone else has to follow.

Educating people about these issues can happen via many methods, including grassroots seminars, social media, traditional media, educational institutions, and entertainment. Educating voters about these issues is, in my opinion, the most important action that freedom-loving Americans can take, because with this education voters will gain a renewed clarity and motivation to solve the life-or-death issues that will save America and freedom.

All those who love freedom must defend, maintain, and increase the sacred, individual rights of freedom which so many have paid for with their lives and their blood.
